KUALA LUMPUR: The evening rain did not deter thousands of visitors turning up at the Dataran Merdeka for the Happy Chinese New Year Carnival Malaysia 2020 last night.
Hosted by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, People’s Republic of China’s Culture and Tourism Ministry, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia and the Federal Territories Tourism Department, the event scheduled at 8.30pm only started an hour later due to evening downpour.
The carnival included a parade, cultural performances and a food street. The carnival-goers were also given a chance to toss Yu Sheng that symbolises good fortune.
One of the highlights of the carnival is the Huuu-Art Market that offers visitors a chance to experience the cultures of Malaysia and China.
During the event, thousands of visitors enjoyed the cultural and arts performances presented by Malaysia and China’s performers.
The performers include Malaysian singer-cum-director Ah Niu, singer Layla Sania, singer-actor Alvin Chong, Chun Lei and Liu Yuan Yuan from China.
Among the dignitaries were Malaysian Special Envoy to China Tan Kok Wai, China’s culture and tourism vice-minister Zhang Xu, China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan and Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general (culture) Saraya Arbi.
