Dato Sri Tiong video-conferencing meeting with Alibaba HQ team

22.6.2020: Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the People’s Republic of China cum MCBC Chairman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing conducted an online video-conferencing meeting with Alibaba headquarters management team based in Hangzhou to discuss particularly on enhancing the cross-border e-Commerce trade between Malaysia and China.

The representatives who attended the above meeting were Mr James Song, Secretary-General of Globalization office of Alibaba and Mr Samuel Lee, Deputy CEO of Malaysia-China Business Council.

The Alibaba team introduced project progress and achievements of eWTP Malaysia, including trade, tourism, technology, training, and response to Covid-19 pandemic. The Alibaba team also emphasized the importance of Malaysia as the first international eWTP hub, and that progress has been quite positive since its launching in 2017. The goals of eWTP Malaysia are to promote Malaysia as regional trade hub and support Malaysia’s transformation.

Alibaba team expressed that the importance of cooperation with Malaysian government on policy innovation, including online B2B trade services, export of durian and storage of goods. Alibaba also expressed the wish for the support and advice of MCBC to ensure stable policies supporting eWTP going forward.

Dato Sri Tiong said he will work hard to assist on the policy issues related to Malaysia-China bilateral cross-border e-Commerce by coordination among ministries and government agencies in order to make the flow of goods more efficient between Malaysia and China.

Dato Sri Tiong and Alibaba team then closed the meeting by extending invitations to visit one another in China and Malaysia as soon as conditions permit. Both parties expressed sincere wish for cooperation and meetings in the future.
